Cummins engine with approximately 4150 hours is electronically-controlled, common-rail design. Smart Craft digital monitor in pilothouse and digital-analog gauges at the flybridge. Dual Racor fuel filters. Many parts and spares included. Spare prop.
Raw water failure alarm at helm.
Bennett trim tabs.
Kohler 6 kw generator in sound enclosure. Racor fuel filter.

The sellers had the prop pitch increased (not an uncommon practice among long-range trawler-ers), which is thought to improve fuel efficiency at displacement speeds, but it is known that the engine will not reach full rated rpm as a consequence. It would be necessary to re-pitch the prop if it is desired to achieve full rated rpm (3400).

House bank consists of two 8D batteries. 4D start battery. Separate group generator start battery. Separate AGM stern thruster batteries (2). Xantrex Freedom Marine 30 3000 watt inverter/charger, with an un-used spare aboard. Separate YACHT 24-v charger for stern thruster batteries. Victron isolation transformer.

The engineroom is accessed from the pilothouse via hinged deck hatch with lifters, or from a watertight door in the day head. There is a massive amount of storage space in the machinery space aft of the engine. Access around the engine makes service easy. The engineroom is nicely finished including deck plates and a workbench (with vise) and tool storage cabinet. LED engineroom lights.

Construction

Construction GRP
Underwater profile Semi-Displacement
Finish Gelcoat finish

Total LOA from swimdeck to anchor 40' 6".

Vinyl wrap on hull — the boat was originally built with a dark blue gelcoat hull, but the color had faded unevenly — the owners added the wrap in 2021 to make the hull shiny and uniformly dark blue again. Alternately the hull could be painted. Or it could be re-wrapped again (at some future time when necessary -- not yet) at a much lower cost. There is extra vinyl material aboard in the inventory of spares in case a repair becomes necessary.

Heavy hand-laid fiberglass hull construction. Vinylester resins used in the outer layers to help prevent blistering. Integral grid structure is designed to provide a very sturdy hull with little flexing.

All handrails are of double-rung design for safety, and are welded and beautifully polished.

Deck hardware is sturdy and high-quality stainless steel.

FRP fuel and holding tanks. Stainless steel water tanks.

Boarding astern is from a large swim platform though the transom door. The covered cockpit is large enough for several deck chairs. The sturdily-built wide sliding aft cabin door provides entry to the full-beam saloon, which is much larger than would be expected. The galley is forward starboard and features granite countertops, an electric Princess range, and a Norcold refrigerator/freezer. This boat was built with a large custom cabinet in the salon that the owner uses as a pantry, for gear storage, and to house a microwave. It was originally intended for a washer/dryer, which could be installed. There's a comfortable freestanding recliner chair aft starboard -- a nice feature on a boat this size. An icemaker is installed here also. To port is the convertible L-shaped dinette (with new upholstery), storage cabinet and TV. Just forward and down is the day head -- complete with shower capability -- very convenient with guests aboard. And is it ever nice to have a second toilet aboard....

The pilothouse is just two steps up from the salon and is not isolated as on many other pilothouse models. The L-shaped dinette (with new upholstery) allows three or four guests to enjoy the pilothouse while underway. The dinette converts to a single pilot berth. The helm station is to starboard, and features a helm seat that slides forward. Forward visibility from the helm station is excellent, and because of the low pilothouse design it's possible to view the aft quarters directly from the helm seat also (unusual in a pilothouse model). Sliding pilothouse doors port and starboard allow easy access to the dock, the foredeck or to the flybridge.

Footwells with high bulwarks provide security when exiting the pilothouse, and the wide, full-size steps to the flybridge make access safe and easy. There are no vertical ladders on this boat!

The master cabin has a queen bed, hanging lockers port and starboard, six storage drawers, two storage cabinets, and separate head and shower compartments.

The flybridge has two pedestal helm seats and an L-shaped settee. Upholstery was replaced 2024. There is a custom fold-up table with an electric outlet, intended for a grill and entertaining. As with the entire exterior of the boat, the design of the flybridge is uncluttered and obviously intended to be simple to maintain and easy to clean.

Cabin heating and cooling is provided by a two reverse-cycle units. Additionally there is a Webasto forced-air furnace system. And for fresh air this boat has nine opening windows (including an opening windshield window), five opening stainless steel portlights, and two overhead hatches.

Heads are Vacuflush.

Broker's Comments

This Helmsman Trawlers 38 Pilothouse is a unique opportunity in a hard-to-find model -- and is positioned in a location ideally-situated for undertaking the Great Loop.

She appears in good and attractive condition. The sellers have owned her for six years and have been attentive in their care and maintenance. This boat is well-prepared for cruising, having completed the Great Loop twice in succession recently. Bridge clearance can be reduced to under 13' with the retractable mast. She is equipped for hot and cold climate conditions.

She has a number of optional features including Kohler generator, reverse-cycle heat/air, a forced-air furnace system, bow and stern thrusters, and a factory-built custom pantry storage cabinet. Other recent additions include solar panels (450 watts), 2019 AB RIB with 20 hp Tohatsu outboard, Seawise davit system, Victron isolation transformer, new 2024 interior and exterior upholstery, and Flag Blue vinyl hull wrap.

Originally imported and sold as a Mariner Yachts International 37 Seville Pilothouse, this model is the predecessor to the Helmsman Trawlers 38 Pilothouse and is dimensionally equal.

This boat gives the impression of being much larger than its size implies with a very roomy interior and a design that includes a full-beam saloon, a day head, separate master head and shower compartments, and an extended pilothouse that actually serves as a comfortable living area in addition to its piloting function.

The quality of materials and construction are evident with teak and holly floors, beautiful teak joinery, heavy fittings and rails, sturdy deck sections, and thick engine compartment sound insulation.

You'd be hard-pressed to fit more boat into a 40' slip -- and with her Cummins QSB 5.9 480 hp engine she performs frugally at 7 or 8 knots, and has the power to get up and go when needed.

Located Gulf Shores, Alabama, this boat could easily be transported by water to many locations in the eastern US and Canada. Also, the flybridge cowling is removable so it is possible to ship this boat overland fairly economically.

Compare this boat to a Nordic Tug 37 or 39, or to an American Tug 34, 365, or 395. You'll find the Helmsman is roomier, has a more finely-crafted interior, and is built to a very high standard.
